Speech by President Restivo event in commemoration of 30 years since the Chernobyl disaster.
Kiev, Maidan Square, April 26, 2016
The April 26, 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the catastrophic explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which has left an indelible mark in the world, becoming a symbol of the destructive potential of ‘nuclear energy even in peacetime…
The impact of Chernobyl, nearly 30 years later, is a constant reminder of how life has become fragile and precarious. The Chernobyl explosion was the largest nuclear disaster of the 20th century. Tens of thousands people who live within the exclusion zone around the Chernobyl plant 30 km were evacuated; hundreds of thousands of people have suffered from diseases caused by radiation over the years.
The hospitable consciousness has moved around the world but especially Italy, above all strove for medical and humanitarian assistance and more than 500,000 children were taken to Italy for a recovery vacation and / or treatment that in most cases has served to save thousands of lives.
What makes Chernobyl today and tomorrow is disturbing that the exact number of victims will never be known.
All the same three million children who required medical treatment, up to now, represents the number of those who may be seriously ill; undoubtedly their future life will be deformed by it, as well as their childhood.
Many of them will be subjected to untimely death.
“Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan confirms that two million people in Belarus, including 500,000 children, being at high risk as yet, are still living in highly contaminated areas. At the end of the year 2015, about 70,000 people are still waiting to be evacuated. Only in Ukraine 5000 babies are born each year with genetic heart defects.
The Chernobyl disaster will leave measurable radioactive contamination in an area of 15,000 square miles for 300 years. (Flashlight Report).
Continuing discharging of low doses through the food chain remains a huge risk for the populations: some areas of land will remain radioactive for at least 24,000 years, up to 1 million hectares can not be farmed for 100 years.
Before 1985, over 80% of children in Chernobyl territories of Belarus, Ukraine and European Russia were to keeping their healthy; Today 80% of children born are considered unhealthy.
Contamination of the food chain after 30 years, the Chernobyl zone, remains even more radioactive than previously thought. According to research released by the American Geophysical Union, the half-life of cesium 137 decay normally in 30 years, but now scientists believe that it will take between 180-320 years old because the cesium disappear from the local environment and soil contamination –
Ground contamination remains the biggest threat to health and cesium-137 found its way through the food chain in the human body.
UNITED PLANET, NGOs accredited by “civil society” all ‘Economic Social Council of the United Nations, as well as a consequence of the “Universe Foundation” both chaired by the late President Aglaia, is an important point of junction of seriously ill people, especially children, many sufferers of thyroid and many of leukemia.
For this, United Planet has long engaged in international initiatives whose aim is to find a compatible donor and then the marrow transplant with the hope of reviving to innocent creatures, even after thirty years, they are born sick, deformed, tortured.
United Planet also participates in international research committees within the UN, to protect life through the protection of a world and its environment, more and more devastated.
“Not to forget Chernobyl”, also means not forgetting about the health of their children and loved ones and those who are even more exposed to diseases and suffering, not only in Ukraine but all over the world. Therefore, I ask you to help and support our organization.
It ‘s true, he says…, “Hope is the last to die” but, you have not even die of hope !!!
